Kings Of Leon's Caleb Followill Expecting First Child

'We can't wait to meet the new addition to our family,' Followill and wife Lily Aldridge say in statement to MTV News.

Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill and his wife, model Lily Aldridge, are expecting their first child, a spokesperson for the band confirmed to MTV News on Thursday (December 29).

"We are thrilled to announce that we are expecting our first child together," the couple said in a statement. "We can't wait to meet the new addition to our family."

The official confirmation comes one day after E! Online cited a source that said Aldridge was "approximately three months along" in her pregnancy. The two were married in May, at a ceremony held at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California after dating for more than two years.

"It was the perfect day," Followill said of the event.

The announcement of the couple's first child puts a happy cap on what was, by all accounts, a rather interesting year for the Kings, who came into 2011 riding their Come Around Sundown album, feuded with "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy (who would subsequently apologize for calling the band "self-centered a--holes") and released a well-received documentary, "Talihina Sky."

In the summer, after a much-publicized incident at a Dallas concert in which Followill claimed to suffer "heat exhaustion," the band scrapped the remainder of their U.S. tour in support of Sundown, before returning to the road in September for a run of Canadian shows. They wrapped the year with a tour of Australia and a pair of Grammy nominations: A Best Rock Album nod for Sundown and a Best Long Form Music Video nom for "Talihina Sky."

Macedonia: Europe's New Hotspot for Illegal Immigrants (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in Les Temps.

LOJANE -- Several dozen young men are basking in the warm mid-day sun. They are Afghan and Pakistani. Behind them, on a white wall, is graffiti extolling the glories of the UĈK -- ex-Kosovo Albanian guerilla fighters.

Over the past two years, the Macedonian village of Lojane, which borders Serbia, has become a stop-over on the illegal migration routes to Western Europe. "It started when groups of three or four would arrive periodically. It didn't disturb us at first," says Selam Mehmeti, the head of the village community. "But since this summer, it's grown to a whole other dimension: there were 500 in November." (See TIME's photoessay: Immigration in Europe.)

The story these men tell is almost always the same. Khan, a 22-year-old Afghan from Kandahar, travelled through Iran, Turkey and then Greece before arriving in Bitola, Macedonia. He then headed for Lojane so he could get into Serbia. Serbian police have already sent him back to Macedonia twice.

The latest plan is to try to go through Hungary. "After that -- from Austria on -- everything will be fine. I want to go to Paris, where I have friends. The most difficult thing is to get through Serbia."

The immigrants sleep in the "jungle" -- the fields that stretch between Lojane and Miratovac, the nearest village, some three kilometers away. Miratovac is in Serbia, but its population is entirely Albanian. "The border has been closed since 1993," Blerim, an inhabitant of Lojane, explains. "Traditionally, relations between the two villages have played an important role. Both my mother and my wife come from Miratovac."

Acting like they don't exist

Where the dirt road abruptly turns to asphalt: this is the only place to demarcate the border line between Macedonia and Serbia. Serbian police and military police are on permanent patrol, and stop anyone who tries to go across, either from Miratovac, or the neighboring town of Presevo. Busloads of illegal immigrants stopped anywhere in Serbia are also sent to Lojane.

All the immigrants say they heard about the village either on the Internet or through friends. But village head Mehmeti says that's not true: he says well-organized networks wait for the immigrants along the country's southern borders, at Gevgelija and Bitola, and bring them here. "And the ones that get caught at the Tabanovce border checkpoint, (10 km from the village) come here too." (See more international news in Global Spin.)

There is no visible presence of Macedonian police: the border is guarded only on the Serbian side, villagers say. There are also no humanitarian organizations in Lojane, even though the winter cold is going to make survival conditions for the immigrants that much worse. "Everybody acts as if they don't exist," says Mehmeti.

Despite agreements made with the European Union, Serbia and Macedonia are incapable of dealing with the new tide of clandestine immigrants, who are increasingly opting to take this route instead of the heavily monitored road from Greece to Bulgaria to the north. Skopje has only one immigration detention center that no journalists have been able to visit, and that officially just has space for several dozen people.

The village head is pleased: it's quiet today, there are "only" a few dozen illegal immigrants in Lojane. However, a line of some 15 men can be seen walking through the fields from Tabanovce. A small Macedonian border police patrol watches from the derelict gas pump located halfway between the villages of Lojane and Vaksince. They neither comment, nor pursue the men, but just keep watching instead.

Obama delays request for $1.2T debt limit increase

President Barack Obama is delaying his request for another $1.2 trillion increase in the nation's debt limit at the request of congressional leaders.

It's basically because of a technicality.

The White House had been ready to ask for the increase Friday because the government is within $100 billion of exhausting its current borrowing authority. Congress would then have 15 days to reject the request, though Obama would veto any objections in order to ensure that the government does not default on its obligations.

But with Congress not due to return to Washington until mid-January, a bipartisan group of lawmakers asked Obama to delay his request so they would be in session during the 15-day period allowed for objections.

"The administration is in discussions with leaders in both houses to determine the best timing for submission of certification and any subsequent votes in the two houses," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Friday.

Kevin Smith, a spokesman for Speaker John Boehner, said the House leadership preferred not having to call members back to Washington early to vote on the increase request, but would have done so if necessary.

A senior White House official said Obama will make his request within days. The Treasury Department will use accounting measures to ensure that the nation does not reach its debt limit before the $1.2 trillion increase is finalized, said the official, who requested anonymity because the person lacked authority to speak publically.

The debt limit is the amount the government can borrow to finance its operations. It has soared because the government has run record deficits over the past decade. The borrowed money has helped pay for two wars, stimulate the nation's economy after the worst recession since the Great Depression and keep intact broad tax cuts initiated during the Bush administration.

Obama's request to increase the nation's borrowing authority would boost the debt limit to a record $16.4 trillion. The president and Congress agreed to raise it to that level in three steps as part of the August deal that was struck hours before a threatened government default.

Officials say the $1.2 trillion increase should be enough to allow the government to keep borrowing until the end of 2012, or just after the presidential election.

Congress agreed to raise the debt limit by $400 billion in August and by another $500 billion in September. House Republicans voted against the second increase, but failed to block it because the Senate approved it. The increases are scheduled to take effect unless both chambers vote against them.

The White House announced the delay in the debt limit request from Hawaii, where the president is on vacation.

Analysts Revved Up for Automotive Industry in 2012 (NYSE:WFC ...

Scottrade: $7 Online Trades. Real-Time Stock Quotes

Eleven independent analysts forecast an average sales figure of 13.6 million light vehicles in 2012. The prediction would be an increase of 6-7% over this year depending on how 2011 wraps up. The spike in auto sales is attributed to rising employment, increasing credit availability, new products and aging vehicles currently driven by Americans. If, and that?s a big IF, consumers meet these expectations, that will be great news for shareholders of General Motors (NYSE:GM), Ford (NYSE:F), Toyota Motors (NYSE:TM), and Honda Motor Company (NYSE:HMC).

Don?t Miss: Iran Threatens to Block Oil Flow Through Vital Strait of Hormuz in Response to U.S. Sanctions.

Though the most conservative estimate of 13 million by Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) is a full million less than the loftiest of 14 million by Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), the spread is still narrower than the 1.5 million difference in 2011 predictions. Analysts predict just as much economic bad news in 2012, but believe consumers are less skittish than they were three years ago when the recession began.

Automotive News quoted Alec Gutierrez, Senior Market Analyst for Kelley Blue Book, who said, ?The Dow fell 1,500 points ? and car sales stayed smooth and consistent. The American consumer has seen so much gone wrong. If they have to buy a car, they will.?

While a European recession is possible in 2012, it could possibly be outweighed by an American economic surge. Jeff Schuster, a forecaster for the Americas for LMC Automotive, says that the more telling factors will be pent-up demand, a growing inventory, and credit availability.? The average age of vehicles on the road is currently 10.7 years, up from 8 or 9 over the past decade according to Tom Kontos, Executive Vice President of Customer Strategies and Analytics for auction house ADESA. ?Americans have gone without for a very long time.? ?I need a car? is the biggest reason for optimism,? Kontos said per Automotive News.

Root for only the home team?

Even though he called me and my ilk ?underwear guys? the other day, I still read George Vecsey in the Times. What can I say? He?s good. And he?s just about done, so no sense in boycotting him a day or two before his retirement.

Today he tackles a subject close to my heart: rooting for a team from a geographic area with which you have no connection. ?It vexes him and he?s curious about it. He starts by talking about Cardinals fans who are not from Cardinal country, then moves on to other sports:

In New York I run into Packers fans who have never lived in Wisconsin, Canadiens fans who have never lived in La Belle Province, Celtics fans who admire Russell and Bird and Pierce but have no trace of a Boston accent. The cable brings sport into our homes and bars, causing fans to pick a team from outside their natural habitat ??If you root for a team not from your region ? or know somebody who does ? can you give some details? How does that work out for everybody?

As I?ve said countless times around here, I?ve never been to a game in Atlanta. My Braves thing is because they were the only baseball I could watch after I moved to West Virginia in 1985 and they just grew on me. I suppose for a lot of people there?s a front-runner thing too (I?d guess there were fewer Packers, Cowboys and Bulls fans around the country in the 1980s than there are now). ?But there are countless other reasons too.

Neat topic. Almost so neat that I am willing to forgive Vecsey for saying that bloggers have ruined the fine art of reporting just as he publishes a column in which he?s basically crowd-sourcing like a lot of bloggers do.

Accused Sydney robber flees to Chinese consulate (AP)

SYDNEY ? Australian police have arrested a man accused of robbing a Sydney bar and then inadvertently fleeing to the grounds of the Chinese consulate, sparking a tense manhunt.

New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch says police were chasing the man Friday when he scaled the fence surrounding the nearby consulate grounds. Murdoch says the man and police traded gunfire, but no one was hit.

Police shut down roads around the consulate and secured the complex before finding the man in a building outside the consulate grounds several hours later. He was arrested.

Police also arrested the man's alleged accomplice outside the bar. Officials did not release the men's names.

Murdoch says the man's decision to flee to the consulate grounds was random.

Stock index futures signal mixed open (Reuters)

(Reuters) Stock index futures pointed to a mixed open on Wall Street for the last session of the year on Friday, with futures for the S&P 500 down 0.06 percent, Dow Jones futures down 0.1 percent and Nasdaq 100 futures up 0.22 percent at 0930 GMT.

* European stocks inched higher in thin trade, with a number of euro zone indexes set to post 2011 losses of about 20 percent, hammered by the region's debt crisis.

* The U.S. Federal Reserve's balance sheet grew in the latest week with a rise in central bank liquidity swaps, even though holdings of Treasuries and agency debt declined, Fed data

showed on Thursday.

* The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission got a fresh dressing-down from the judge who rejected its $285 million settlement with Citigroup Inc (C.N), as he said the regulator kept him out of the loop on its efforts to salvage the case.

* Sears Holdings Corp (SHLD.O) identified 79 of the 100 to 120 Sears and Kmart stores it said earlier this week it would close, with the list split almost evenly between the two chains.

* U.S. stocks rallied on Thursday, moving the S&P 500 back into positive territory for 2011 ahead of the last trading day of the year, on more positive signals on the U.S. economy.

* The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) shot up 135.63 points, or 1.12 percent, to 12,287.04 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) gained 13.38 points, or 1.07 percent, to 1,263.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) advanced 23.76 points, or 0.92 percent, to 2,613.74.

* The S&P 500 edged above its 200-day moving average, a key measure of the market's long-term momentum.

Putin rejects calls to talk with protest leaders (AP)

MOSCOW ? Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Wednesday rejected calls to hold talks with opposition leaders who have brought tens of thousands of Russians into the streets to demand an end to his 12-year rule, saying he doesn't know what the demonstrators want or who he would talk to.

Putin has belittled the opposition even as his government has rolled out a set of proposed reforms in response to outrage over the Dec. 4 election for parliament, in which only Kremlin-approved parties were allowed to run and observers reported widespread vote-rigging. Putin hopes to return to the presidency in a March vote.

The opposition leaders "should formulate some kind of common platform and common position, so that it's possible to understand what people want," a smiling Putin told a group of Russian reporters. "Is there a common platform? No. Who is there to talk to?"

The organizers of the two vast Moscow rallies this month included many prominent public figures and opposition leaders. Although some differ widely in their political views, they have passed joint resolutions with a list of concrete demands, including a rerun of the parliamentary election, the resignation of the Central Election Commission chief and the removal of barriers that have prevented opposition parties from taking part in elections.

The protests, unprecedented in post-Soviet Russia, have undermined Putin's image as the inevitable winner of the March vote. He previously served as president in 2000-2008.

Putin has promised to ease rules for opposition candidates and make the voting process more transparent, but he has firmly rejected the demand that the parliamentary election be rerun.

Putin's former finance minister, Alexei Kudrin, has offered to help mediate between the opposition and the government. Leaders of the opposition said Wednesday that they welcomed Kudrin's offer and would present their principles and conditions for talks by the end of the week.

Asked Wednesday about his refusal to take part in campaign debates, Putin said it would make no sense since the opposition leaders are "not burdened with real work" and "always demand the impossible."

His contention is that opposition candidates can promise voters anything, while he as prime minister bears greater responsibility and has to follow through on his promises. He has offered to arrange for "younger brothers," his subordinates in the government, to take part in the televised debates.

US Army's A160 Hummingbird drone-copter to don 1.8 gigapixel camera

Starting in July of 2012, the United States Army will deploy three Boeing A160 Hummingbird drones to Afghanistan as part of a one-year trial program. Unlike the Predator drones already in combat, the A160 is a rotor-based aircraft capable of vertical take-offs and landings. What's more, the craft will be affixed with the DARPA-developed ARGUS-IS imaging system -- which boasts a 1.8 gigapixel camera the Army says can "track people and vehicles from altitudes above 20,000 feet." The A160 Hummingbird platform will provide the Army with the ability and flexibility to: take off and land without a runway; fly for twelve hours or more without refueling; and monitor up to 65 enemies of the State simultaneously. Test flights of the unmanned chopper are scheduled for early 2012 in Arizona, but residents hoping to get a glimpse of the A160 in action best have great eyesight -- the ARGUS-IS system can see targets from almost 25-miles down range. Oh, and don't forget to smile when you look up. You want to look your best for the eye in the sky, right?

H.S. SPORTS: Area teams to host holiday tournaments

Some high school teams consider the time from several days before Christmas to a couple of days after New Year's Day to be a break.

But most consider that a break only from league games and every day practices.

Because in reality, the majority of area sports teams are in action during this hoilday time, and most travel out of the area to participate in those events.

There are four events scheduled to be hosted by area teams -- the Hound Invitational Tournament (HIT) at Shippensburg and the Fannett-Metal Christmas Tournament for boys basketball, the Teddy Thanos Lions Club Tournament for girls hoops and the Dale Bock Memorial Holiday Tournament at Chambersburg for wrestling (see Tuesday's paper for preview).

The F-M Christmas and HIT have had long lives -- this year is the 39th edition at Fannett-Metal and it's the 38th for Shippensburg.

However, the F-M event will have a different look because Forbes Road decided not to participate this year for the first time in quite a while. Shalom Christian has taken the Cardinals' spot.

The HIT was only a three-team event last year, but picked up Exeter to go with Camp Hill and Palmyra.

The Lions Club tourney at Forbes Road has the same four teams as last year -- the host Cardinals, Fannett-Metal, Hyndman and the Frederick (Md.) Force.

Chambersburg's boys did not play in a holiday tournament a year ago, but have been invited to the Red Lion Tournament. The Trojans are paired against Penn Manor in the

first round, while the host Lions take on Bradford, which is making the trip from the northernmost part of the state.

The Trojan girls were originally scheduled to play in a tournament at Susquehanna Township, but that event was scrapped. So Chambersburg will host Palmyra on Wednesday and play at Warwick on Thursday.

Southern Fulton's boys get the holiday schedule kicked off tonight, playing Hancock at the Tri-State Shootout in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Other boys teams in action this week include Greencastle-Antrim (Doub Tourney in Williamsport, Md.), James Buchanan (Big Spring Holiday) and Cumberland Valley Christian (Valley Forge Christian).

Shippensburg's girls (Lower Dauphin Winter Classic), James Buchanan's girls (Big Spring Holiday) and Southern Fulton's girls (Hancock, Md. Holiday) are also competing this week.

Greencastle (Francis Scott Key) and Waynesboro (Conestoga Valley) are involved in individual style wrestling events this week, while Chambersburg, JB and Ship will all compete at Big Spring's Bulldog Bash swimming meet.

NCAA Skiing: Two CU national champs, one pair of skis

When University of Colorado student Reid Pletcher crossed the finish line first in the men`s 20K classical at the NCAA Skiing Championships in Stowe, Vt., last week, it was the second time that day that a Buff raced those skis to a win.

Earlier, Eliska Hajkova won a sprint to finish first in the women`s 15K classical on the same skis. She didn`t know it until she greeted him at the finish line of his race.

"When we hugged each other, I was like, 'Did you have good skis?'" Hajkova said. "And he said, 'I have your skis!'"

(Actually, they`re team skis. "We were thinking, when we retire them, we`ll have them both sign them and put them on the wall," said Bruce Cranmer, head Nordic coach for the team.)

Hajkova and Pletcher are the 82nd and 83rd skiers to win individual NCAA titles for the ski team -- a legacy that goes back to 1959, when alpine skier Dave Butts brought home two championships for the school. It won four individual titles the next year, a feat students repeated in 1963, 2006 and 2008.

The CU ski team thus leads the nation in total individual NCAA champions; University of Denver follows, with 79.

"We`ve got a good group that push each other in training," Cranmer said. "Our focus has always been to try to win, and certainly some of this goes towards recruiting -- I basically go after the best I can find."

'Psychologically stronger`

Hajkova was almost a runner, not a skier. Her father, who ran hurdles, pressured her to race as a runner at a young age, but it stressed her out. One day at a race, when she heard the pistol, she turned and ran the other way.

"In the period I didn`t race, I was a Girl Scout, and it was just girls all the time; it was boring," Hajkova said with a laugh. "And my mom helped me find a sport that was girls and boys together, and the only thing was cross-country skiing."

Fortunately, Hajkova lived in Jablonec nad Nisou, one of the best places for Nordic skiing in the Czech Republic.

Now, she`s "one of the more fierce, hard-core competitors out there," Pletcher said.

In her classical race at the collegiate nationals, in pouring rain ("When I kicked, I felt the water between my toes in my boots," she said), she knew that it was a race of tactics -- especially against her frequent rival from Utah, Maria Graefnings.

"I wanted to be psychologically stronger," Hajkova said.

Graefnings attacked three times, she said, but she waited for the final hill and the sprint finish. And won.

Cranmer said it was a finish he`d waited all season to see.

The sprinters, at distance

Hajkova and Pletcher had shared skis before last week -- they swapped at the U.S. nationals, too. There, Hajkova was lined up at the start of that race with no skis, making jokes about running rather than skiing, waiting for Pletcher to finish.

Cranmer said Pletcher didn`t have a pair of no-wax skis -- what the conditions called for last Friday in Stowe -- and that he and Hajkova are similar in size and have similar styles. Though they won distance events, both are sprinters.

Pletcher grew up skiing in Sun Valley, Idaho, with his family. Despite skiing strong for the past two years at CU, this was his first chance to go to the championships.

"He was one of the top skiers from our region, but because we had so many good skiers -- I mean, he would have been the top skier for a lot of schools," Cranmer said.

"It breaks your heart when you`re not taking the guy ranked No. 4 in the region."

This year, finally there, he got a rocky start.

"The first race didn`t go well; I got 23rd," Pletcher said of his skate race. "So I didn`t know if I could pull it off, but turned it around for the classic race. I felt way better."

Cranmer said Pletcher recovered well.

"He kind of relaxed and thought about the racing," Cranmer said. "And I encouraged him to take care of the details and don`t worry about the big picture, it`ll take care of itself."

It did. In his classical race, he became only the third American to win an NCAA classical championship. But Pletcher talked about wanting to help the team, and wanting to race for Spencer Nelson, a teammate who died in a climbing accident last summer. (The ski team dedicated its season to him.)

"When I`m skiing for a team, I put a lot of pressure on myself because it`s a lot harder letting the team down than it is letting myself down," he said.

"Skiing, it`s a really close-knit community," Pletcher said. "You know everyone, there`s really good people to hang around with.

"And to be honest, it`s one of the most bad-ass sports."

Christmas Online Sales Jump to 16.4 Percent With iPad Contributing Major Share

It clearly seems that folks are likely to hop onto the shopping wagon once again even after being done with the shopping season, according to IBM's Smarter Commerce unit, which tracked online shopping this Christmas Day.

IBM's Benchmark online retail figures saw a 16.4 percent boost on Dec. 25 over the last year, said a report by Associated Press. Online sales further rose by 10 percent as of 3 p.m. EST the very next day. Post-Christmas deals are said to contribute to the sudden step-up in sales on this particular day, which is also dubbed "Mega Monday."

One of the busiest shopping days of the season also witnessed a sales spurt of 172.9 percent with an increasing number of shoppers making purchases using their iOS, Android or tablet devices. Just into 18 months after its debut, the iPad accounted for the lion's share of nearly 7 percent of all online sales on Sunday, with the iPhone and Android raking in 6.4 percent and 5 percent share of the sales. The report did not reveal data about purchases made using gift cards.

As for the new trend spotted this year, John Squire, chief strategy officer at IBM Smarter Commerce, said in a statement on Forbes, "The iPad wasn't even around two years ago and now it's the leading mobile device for purchases. Android came out from nowhere last year, and now it is in third place."

Despite the weak economy, Americans are ever willing to splurge especially with e-commerce making waves this year.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Authorities in Iran said Sunday they are again moving ahead with plans to execute a woman sentenced to death by stoning on an adultery conviction in a case that sparked an international outcry, but are considering whether to carry out the punishment by hanging instead.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is already behind bars, serving a 10-year sentence on a separate conviction in the murder of her husband. Amid the international outrage her case generated, Iran in July 2010 suspended plans to carry out her death sentence on the adultery conviction.

On Sunday, a senior judiciary official said experts were studying whether the punishment of stoning could be changed to hanging.

"There is no haste. ... We are waiting to see whether we can carry out the execution of a person sentenced to stoning by hanging or not," said Malek Ajdar Sharifi, the head of justice department of East Azerbaijan province, where Ashtiani is jailed.

"As soon as the result (of the investigation) is obtained, we will carry out the sentence," he said, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The charge of a married woman having an illicit relationship requires a punishment of stoning, he said.

He said judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani ordered a halt to stoning in order to allow Islamic experts to investigate whether the punishment can be altered in Ashtiani's case.

Ashtiani was convicted of adultery in 2006 after the murder of her husband.

She was later convicted of being an accessory to her husband's murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

"Theme Park 2.0" features pricey, high-tech attractions (Reuters)

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) ? Investment in theme parks and cutting-edge attractions along the lines of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando surged during the recession, leading one developer to suggest the business is entering a new Golden Age.

"It's almost like a Theme Park 2.0, or a re-boot," said Brent Young, co-founder of the Super 78 production studio in Hollywood, California.

"We're really coming into a second Golden Age in theme park development," he said.

The first boom, which peaked in the 1970s, saw extensive construction of theme parks in the United States from the ground up. Development of Walt Disney World, Six Flags, Busch Gardens and numerous regional parks led to a saturation of the U.S. market by the 1980s, according to John Gerner, managing director of Leisure Business Advisors.

The new era is a global phenomenon propelled by technological advances and a growing middle class in Asia and third-world countries, Gerner and Young said.

"In the U.S., we think of a squeeze on the middle class. But in other parts of the world, they've got an expanding middle class," said Gerner, who has consulted on projects for leading attractions worldwide.

Gerner said China is experiencing a theme park construction boom comparable to what occurred in the United States in the 1970s. The coming of a Disney park in Shanghai triggered an expansion of the Chinese regional theme park company Happy Valley, he said. Disney broke ground in Shanghai this year and anticipates a 2015 open.

"In the past when Disney has opened in a region of the world, it has encouraged others to do so. With the Shanghai Disney park, we would expect a similar increase, its own boom," Gerner said.

Young, who specializes in the application of emerging technologies in themed attractions, said the new Golden Age is marked by the additions of highly themed and immersive experiences using state-of-the-art technology.

HELP FROM HARRY POTTER

The huge success of the Harry Potter ride at Universal Orlando, which executives say boosted attendance by 50 percent, has further ignited demand, Young said. Since that attraction opened in June 2010, Universal has been breaking its attendance records.

"Harry Potter was a disrupter and forced everybody to step up their game," Young said. "It became this arms race."

Young said his business took off in 2007, fueled by projects in China and Singapore even as the U.S. economy was hit by the burst of the housing bubble.

Among his entries opened over the past two years is Flight of the Dragon at the Happy Valley theme park in Shanghai. The ride is a 4-D simulated flying experience moving through a curved black box theater with water sprits, scents and wind creating realistic effects.

Spending on new attractions in the United States also is up. Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services, estimates spending rose 30-35 percent over the past two years, following four years of mostly stagnant attendance and deep discounting at parks.

Much of the spending is on redevelopment and additions to existing parks, he said.

He cited several examples of recent investment in the central Florida tourist hub alone, including SeaWorld Orlando's planned overhaul of its penguin exhibit to include state-of-the-art interactive ride technology, and the just-completed revamp of the historic Cypress Gardens ski-show park in Winter Haven into a Legoland.

"It's what the industry needs to do now to ratchet up," Speigel said.

Ride manufacturers who met in Orlando in November for the annual International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions convention have "never been busier," Speigel said.

"Literally, they're almost at capacity for the next couple of years," he said.

Experts said the end is nowhere in sight, thanks to technological advances that will continue to create demand.

Within the next decade, Young said he expects attractions will enable park guests to feel as if they are sharing space with fully rendered 3-D characters and other nearly unimaginable experiences.

"I'm not even sure what this means," Speigel said of expectations for coming attractions, "(but) it's going to be the 5th dimension."
