Community Cheers Homecoming Prank Victim

A mid-Michigan community cheered on a 16-year-old sophomore -- the victim of an apparent prank by classmates -- as she took her place with other members of her high school's homecoming court.

Whitney Kropp was escorted by her father and grandfather onto the Ogemaw Heights High School football field Friday night in West Branch, about 140 miles northwest of Detroit.

Kropp was named to the homecoming court of the 800-student school earlier this month, but said she felt betrayed after some students suggested her selection was a joke. She said she had been picked on in the past, but it intensified afterward.

Her story has sparked national interest and on Friday, residents and business owners in the West Branch area turned out to the game to show their support and help take a stand against bullying.

Orange T-shirts -- Kropp's favorite color -- have been sold with the slogan "It's not cool to be cruel."

"It's just so much right now for me," Kropp said Friday night. "I had thoughts about not coming but I actually changed my mind and came out. I just thought maybe I won't have fun. But I'm having a lot of fun right now."

Her gown, jewelry, shoes, hair styling and makeup were donated.

"The kids that are bullying, do not let them bring you down," Kropp told reporters. "Stand up for what you believe in, and go with your heart and go with your gut. That's what I did, and look at me now. I'm just as happy as can be."

Many in the stands, even students from visiting Cadillac, wore orange, as did Kropp.

"It wasn't right what they did to her," said Alexis Dahlstrom, a 16-year-old Cadillac junior. "We wanted her to know that there are people out there who support her."

Dahlstrom and her friends learned about Kropp's story on Facebook.

"Whitney is strong. I don't know that I would have had the courage to go," 15-year-old Ogemaw Heights sophomore Heather Oyster said.

Ogemaw Heights won the homecoming game, 24-21, over Cadillac.

Why there is an Electoral College and how it works

Presidents are elected not by national popular vote but by an 18th century constitutional compromise called the Electoral College.

HOW IT FORMED

When framers were drafting the U.S. Constitution, there were two competing ideas on how to elect the president. One group said Congress should do it; the other said it should be a national vote of eligible citizens. There also were disputes over how much slaves should count in representation in Congress and over how power would be distributed between small and large states. The compromise became part of the second article of the Constitution, although the words "Electoral College" are not included. The electors pick the president and vice president.

VOTE TOTALS

Each state gets one electoral vote for each of its representatives in the House and Senate. The District of Columbia gets three votes. All told, there are 538 votes in the Electoral College. A candidate must have at least 270 to win. Except for Maine and Nebraska, states award all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the state. In Maine and Nebraska, votes are apportioned by congressional districts. So in 2008, even though John McCain won Nebraska's statewide popular vote, Barack Obama won the 2nd Congressional District and earned one of the state's five electoral votes.

HOW IT WORKS

Each state's electors will meet on Dec. 17 in their home states and cast their votes for president and vice president. Congress will meet on Jan. 6, 2013, to conduct an official tally of the electoral votes. Vice President Joe Biden will preside and declare the winner.

PROBLEM AREAS

If no candidate gets at least 270 electoral votes, the election goes to the newly elected House of Representatives. Each state delegation in the House gets one vote, and a candidate must win a majority of the states to be elected president. This happened in 1824, when Andrew Jackson won the most popular votes and the most electoral votes, but four candidates split the electoral votes and no one received a majority. The race went to the House and John Quincy Adams, who came in second, was chosen as president. Three other times, candidates won the Electoral College even though they lost the popular vote ? in 1876, 1888 and 2000.

Iraqi convicts riot, escape from prison; 12 killed

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Prisoners seized weapons and set off hours-long clashes with security guards at a prison in Saddam Hussein's hometown that left 12 dead, including 10 guards, before dozens of inmates managed to escape from the facility, Iraqi officials said Friday.

Many of those who escaped from the prison in Tikrit, 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, were al-Qaida suspects, said a provincial spokesman but he could not say whether the terror group was behind the prison break.

The violence erupted on Thursday night, said Mohammed al-Assi, the spokesman for Salahuddin province where Tikrit is located. Several inmates broke into the prison storeroom and grabbed weapons kept there, overpowering the guards, he said.

The prisoners then engaged in an hours-long gun battle with the security troops inside the facility before breaking out of the prison on Friday morning. Security troops later regained control of the prison, al-Assi said.

Following the prison break, a curfew was imposed in Tikrit, he added.

"Everything is under control now. Our security forces are chasing the escaped prisoners and have already recaptured some," al-Assi told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

A provincial health official, Raed Ibrahim, confirmed that 12 people died in the violence ? 10 prison guards and two inmates. He said 32 people were wounded in the clashes.

Qutaiba al-Jubouri, a lawmaker from the province, said a total of 81 inmates, including some who had been sentenced to death, managed to escape but that 36 of them were quickly recaptured.

"This is a regrettable security breach," said al-Jubouri, adding that an investigation will follow, "starting with the commanders of the security forces" at the prison.

He added that special forces were sent to Tikrit from Baghdad in order to put down the rioting.

Another lawmaker, Hakim al-Zamili, said the inmates burned all the prison records, which will complicate efforts to track down those who escaped.

Prison breaks are common in Iraq and are a big embarrassment to the country's Shiite-led government.

Rory Hamilton-Brown signs with Sussex ? Cricket News Update

Rory Hamilton-Brown, ex-Surrey captain, has signed with his former club Sussex after seeking a move from Surrey following the death of teammate and close friend Tom Maynard.

Maynard, a former Surrey batsman, who was also affiliated with the England Lions, passed away abruptly in June this year, in a tragic train accident which shocked the cricketing world. His teammates at Surrey were the worst-hit by the tragedy, particularly skipper Hamilton-Brown, who had been close friends with the deceased cricketer.

The 25-year-old was placed on compassionate leave, but struggled to regain his form despite nearly a month away. He was eventually given permission by team director Chris Adams at the start of September to seek a fresh start with a new club in order to start anew. For this purpose, Surrey released him from the new deal he had signed, which bound him to the club until 2014.

Faced with a choice between Somerset and Sussex, Hamilton-Brown, eventually chose to return to Sussex, a club with which he had previously been affiliated.

?I would like to thank Surrey for the opportunity they gave me to captain such an illustrious club ... I am immensely proud of what I achieved there, both as a captain and a player,? said Hamilton-Brown.

?Losing my best friend Tom ... was indescribably painful,? he continued. ?We were extremely close but ultimately I know I will emerge from this awful tragedy with renewed strength and purpose.

?I am delighted to be returning to Sussex ... I would like to thank Mark Robinson, his coaching staff, the players, management and board at Sussex for welcoming me back so warmly.?

Having made his debut for Surrey against Sussex in a list A match in July 2005, Hamilton-Brown went on to move to Surrey, where he became the club?s youngest captain in 138 years, at the age of 22. His stint at leadership saw the team winning a series of accolades, including their CB40 title win and promotion to the first division in 2011.

However, the death of Maynard proved too devastating a blow, and the right-hander was eventually forced to switch clubs in search of a new environment, in order to resuscitate his career.

Obama blocks Chinese wind farms in Oregon over security

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama blocked on Friday a privately owned Chinese company from building wind turbines close to a Navy military site in Oregon due to national security concerns, and the company said it would challenge the action in court.

The rare presidential order to divest interests in the wind farms comes as Obama campaigns for a second term against Republican Mitt Romney, who has accused him of being soft on China.

Ralls Corp, which had been installing wind turbine generators made in China by Sany Group, has four wind farm projects that are within or in the vicinity of restricted air space at a naval weapons systems training facility, according to the Obama administration.

"There is credible evidence that leads me to believe" that Ralls Corp, Sany Group and the two Sany Group executives who own Ralls "might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States," Obama said in issuing his decision.

Ralls Corp had filed a lawsuit against the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) for ordering it to stop all construction and operations at its projects while the government panel completed its investigation and finalized its recommendation to Obama.

After the decision was announced on Friday, the company said it was confident that the courts would vindicate Ralls Corp's rights under the law and the Constitution.

Although CFIUS reviews dozens of foreign investment deals for potential national security concerns every year, the president is rarely called upon to issue a formal order as companies usually abandon their deals or divest assets when the panel takes issue with their transaction.

The last time a president formally blocked a deal on national security grounds was in 1990 when then President George H.W. Bush stopped a Chinese aero-technology company from acquiring a U.S. manufacturing firm.

"This is a big deal because it is the first time since 1990 that the president of the United States has either blocked a transaction from occurring or divested a transaction that has occurred," said Clay Lowery, a former assistant secretary at Treasury who oversaw the CFIUS process and now is with Rock Creek Global Advisors.

DIVEST

Ralls Corp had hired the George W. Bush administration's top lawyer Paul Clement to help represent the company as well as a former U.S. assistant attorney general, Viet Dinh, who helped the Republican administration develop the Patriot Act. But that appeared to do little to convince the current administration to allow the company to resume operations.

The presidential order gives the Chinese company 90 days to divest all its interests in the projects. However, sources close to Ralls Corp said the company was still evaluating the order and had no immediate plan to unwind its activities.

Only one of the four wind farms was in restricted airspace and CFIUS never came up with a plan that would require the company to only divest interests in that particular project, the sources said.

In addition, the sources said there are other wind farms in the same area that are also operated by foreigners, albeit one company is from Denmark and the other from Germany.

NOT A PRECEDENT

Obama's decision comes as two other Chinese companies are vying for CFIUS approval.

The Treasury Department stressed that Obama's decision was not a precedent for other investments from China or any other country. Acting Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank said the United States generally welcomed investment from China but not in every case.

"Particularly when you're talking about China, but there's other countries where this is true too, one has to be worried about national security concerns," Blank said in remarks at the Council on Foreign Relations earlier on Friday.

China's state-owned oil company CNOOC Ltd is trying to buy Canada's Nexen in a $15.1 billion deal and Chinese auto parts company Wanxiang Group Corp is about to takeover U.S. battery maker A123 Systems Inc. Both Chinese firms are waiting for the government panel's decision and CFIUS experts see the Ralls case as a one-off decision.

"There have been many Chinese investments in the U.S. that have gone through without trouble," said Benjamin Powell, a former general counsel to the director of national intelligence who is now a partner at Wilmer Hale.

Khalil s Picks (28 September 2012)

Today, we have the cool edition of Picks. Geology becomes cool thanks to seashells, bacteria reach new cool levels because they control water?s freezing point, a supernova from a thousand years ago did not give birth to any stars (I?ve decided that this is cool), DNA sequencing in schools should make science even cooler. And more cool stuff.

Very cool indeed.

?

Alex Kasprak, in The Sieve, makes geology and a line graph look cooler than Curiosity on Mars. From where I stand, that?s quite something. Alex explains how seashells are actually history books which recount how our planet?s climate changed oh-so-many years ago. I highlighted this piece in my review of Johns Hopkins University?s The Sieve on his blog, but here it is again? top of the pile.

The Revolution Will Be Clumpy

Geologists are able to tell you the exact history of the waxing and waning of glaciers over the past five million years because microscopic creatures in the ocean have been unwittingly recording this dance in their shells. Their shells are made from the carbon and oxygen found in seawater. As glaciers form, seawater is removed from the ocean and trapped on land, resulting in subtle changes in the chemistry of the ocean. These changes are recorded in the shells, which create a detailed history as they pile up on the ocean floor.

Ideal for Reddit?s TIL (Today I Learned) subthread/subreddit, Seeder El-Showk in his blog, Inspiring Science, has a piece about bacteria and water?s freezing point. Better put: how bacteria actually dictate the freezing point of water. Even better put: water?s freezing point is not 0C if it isn?t contaminated.

The bacteria that make it rain

Strange as it may seem, water doesn?t actually freeze at zero degrees. In fact, even at temperatures as cold as -10?C, water still needs help turning into ice. Living creatures of all stripes have learned to take advantage of this curious fact in different ways, though none have done so with quite as much style as bacteria.

Joel Winston, in Wired.co.uk, has a piece about some cool science not being done by scientists. Synthetic biology in the garage type of thing.

Amateur scientists build Lego-style synthetic BioBricks in public lab

While some may believe that science is better left to scientists, hundreds of amateur biologists around the world have been setting-up makeshift biology labs in their homes, garages and community centres. Some of these ?biohackers? or ?DIY biologists? have political motivations to open up science for all, a few attempt to address an absence of research in rare genetic diseases, some are curious and have a desire to learn, while others are taking part just for the sheer fun of it all.

Eric Sawyer, in his Scitable blog, Bio 2.0, says that with technologies becoming more and more affordable?think DNA sequencing?schools and universities should invest in them for undergraduate education. Eric argues that with better technologies, undergrads can do much cooler and interesting lab experiments which should increase interest in science.

Cheaper Genomes Should Enhance Undergraduate Education

Some things in science are just intrinsically expensive. Digging kilometers-long tunnels filled with high vacuum and superconducting magnets will forever be out of the reach of amateur scientists and universities alike. But some technologies start off appearing intrinsically expensive and rapidly cheapen to the point of becoming widely available. The first computers were enormous machines that required a dedicated team of personnel, but now many of us carry one around in our pocket. DNA sequencing must at first have looked like an intrinsically expensive technology, but today it could not be clearer that DNA sequencing is much more like computing than high energy physics. The cost of sequencing a human genome has fallen at a staggering rate over the last decade (just look at the graph). In fact, the rate of innovation in the DNA sequencing community far exceeds Moore?s Law. If DNA sequencing did follow Moore?s Law, with the cost of sequencing a genome being cut in half every 18 months, sequencing a human genome would today still cost millions.

When a star explodes to form a supernova, new stars form from the deathbed. But, as Kelly Oakes explains in her Scientific American blog, Basic Space, a thousand years ago, a supernova ?lived and died fast, leaving no companion star behind.?

Supernova 1006 lived fast and left no companion behind

A supernova that lit up the skies in the year 1006 lived and died fast, leaving no companion star behind, astronomers have found. The result is the latest clue in a puzzle that has been troubling astronomers for some time ? how does this type of stellar explosion happen? Supernova 1006 exploded, as seen from Earth, in the year 1006 (hence the name). It was probably the brightest star ever visible to humans and could have been bright enough to read by at night . Astronomers know that it was a type Ia supernova ? a particular type of stellar sticky end that involves taking another star along for the ride.

NYC to get 'world's largest' Ferris wheel

AP Photo/Office of the Mayor of New York

This is an artist's rendering of a proposed 625-foot Ferris wheel--billed as the world's largest--planned as part of a retail and hotel complex along the Staten Island waterfront in New York.

By Jennifer Peltz, The Associated Press

The Big Apple is getting another "biggest": The world's biggest Ferris wheel is to be built on Staten Island, in an ambitious attempt to draw tourists to what's sometimes known as the city's "forgotten borough," officials announced Thursday.

The $230 million attraction, to be called the New York Wheel, is to grace a spot overlooking the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and the downtown Manhattan skyline ? a singular view that officials hope will add to the appeal of what they say would be the world's tallest Ferris wheel. The 625-foot-tall structure would swing higher than the Singapore Flyer, the London Eye and a "High Roller" wheel planned in Las Vegas.

"The New York Wheel will be an attraction unlike any other in New York City ? even unlike any other on the planet," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a release.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2014 on the privately financed project, which also includes a 100-shop outlet mall and a 200-room hotel. The grand opening could come by the end of 2015.

While riding the Staten Island Ferry is a staple of many visitors' agendas, the city has long sought to entice tourists off the boat and into Staten Island, the least populous and most remote borough ? one once known for hosting the world's largest landfill.

Australian tourists Leah Field and Adam Lica, for example, were riding the ferry Thursday for its views of the Statue of Liberty. They thought they might have lunch on the Staten Island side but weren't planning to explore further.

"We weren't sure what there is to do there," explained Lica, 32, of Melbourne.

Were there a giant Ferris wheel, would the couple stay to ride it? Probably, he said.

Staten Island has its attractions, including a minor league ballpark and the zoo that hosts Staten Island Chuck, New York's answer to the famous prognosticating groundhog of Punxsutawney, Pa. Chuck bears the dubious distinction of having once bitten Bloomberg.

But Staten Island, the only one of the city's five boroughs not accessible by subway, tends to get overshadowed by its municipal neighbors, so much so that some have at times suggested it secede from the city.

To Staten Island resident Miatta Bryant, the wheel might bring the borough more respect.

"I think it'll be a really good idea," the 26-year-old certified nursing assistant said. "People always say Staten Island is so boring."

The project is expected to bring $500 million in private investment to the borough's St. George waterfront, and the developers will pay the city $2.5 million a year in rent for the land.

New "extreme" Hubble shows deepest view yet of night sky

Cape Canaveral, Florida | Wed Sep 26, 2012 6:28am EDT

Cape Canaveral, Florida (Reuters) - Piecing together 10 years of Hubble Space Telescope images, astronomers on Tuesday unveiled the deepest view yet of a small sliver of the night sky, revealing a kaleidoscope of galaxies and other celestial objects.

The Hubble eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, adds another 5,500 galaxies to Hubble's 2003 and 2004 view into a tiny patch of the farthest universe.

Hubble returned to the same target more than 50 times over the past decade, racking up an additional 2 million seconds of exposure time. The most distant objects found date back to about 500 million years after the universe's formation some 13.7 billion years ago.

The early universe was a violent place, filled with colliding and merging galaxies that radiate in bright blue light, a telltale sign of new star formation.

The Hubble portrait also shows brilliantly shining spiral galaxies and older red fuzzy galaxies whose star-formation days are over.

More than 2,000 images of the same field, taken by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys and its near-infrared Wide Field Camera 3, were combined to form the XDF.

"XDF is the deepest image of the sky ever obtained," astronomer Garth Illingworth, with the University of California at Santa Cruz, said in a statement. "It allows us to explore further back in time than ever before.

Venture capital or private equity? The entrepreneur's dilemma

If you?re a small technology-based business and you want to grow, at some point you?ll need more money than you can raise from operations, or borrow from family and friends. That?s when you will need to turn to professional investors, in the form of a venture capital (VC) or private equity firm that will inject cash in return for a share of the business.

But which is the best option, and what are the risks and rewards of each?

The biggest difference is that a venture capital firm will typically invest, for the short to medium term, in companies at a relatively early stage of their development, when the risks of failure are higher. Many investment companies will either fail, or just putter along without doing anything spectacular.

To compensate for that risk, the successful company had better do spectacularly well ? and so the typical VC will want to exit within three years, for perhaps ten times their initial investment.

As a result, it?s an understatement to say that a VC investment comes with some strings attached; they?re more like heavy-duty industrial cables. Strict performance requirements are standard, as are explicit dividends, determined upfront, which accrue until they can be paid. The VC will typically also demand the right to liquidate their investment ? which may require the right to sell the company as a whole.

Also, don?t expect that as the founder you are automatically the right person to continue as MD or CEO. Part of the value a VC brings is to scale the business, and identify roles within the business (however senior) that need specialised managerial skills. Successful VCs are not, in general, cuddly sorts of people. It?s their job to be hard-headed to the point of ruthlessness; there is, after all, a lot at stake.

So inviting and accepting a VC investment is not a step to be taken lightly, or because it?s some kind of start-up status symbol. The purpose of VC is to provide the funds you need to grow, and so the investment is not a sign that you?ve made it ? it?s the cue to work harder and more seriously than ever.

The typical private equity investor, on the other hand, has a slightly lower appetite for risk. They are more likely to take a five- to ten-year view, investing in a company that already has an established track record and can offer good turns ? if not the spectacular ones demanded by the venture capitalist. A private equity investor will also bring a wider range of skills to the board.

On balance, if you can possibly afford to self-fund for just a little longer it may be worth hanging in there until you become worthy of the private equity funders? attention. If you know that your growth ambitions are doomed to fail without that early cash injection, go for the VC option. But in either case, keep your eyes very wide open ? and take all the experienced advice you can get.

Apple iPhone 5 delays? Blame the screen technology.

Apple is having trouble immediately fulfilling pre-order demand for the iPhone 5. And according to a new report, that's thanks to the new 'in-cell' display technology.?

If you pre-ordered an iPhone 5 sometime in the last 10 days, there's a good chance you won't see your shiny, new, big-screen smartphone until October, which is something of a hassle if you're one of those instant-gratification types.?

So what's behind the delay? Well, according to a new report in Bloomberg, it's the rejiggered display on the iPhone 5. In the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, the display and touch sensor were separate. In the iPhone 5, they're twinned ? the technology is called "in-cell." Bloomberg says it's taking Apple longer than expected to wrestle up the various parts needed for the in-cell displays and to actually assemble the screens.?

"This is like the opening weekend for the summer blockbuster movie," Tom Dinges,?senior principal analyst?at IHS iSuppli, told Bloomberg. "They needed to get a lot of products in the door during a tight window, and these supply constraints that were talked about probably did have some impact." But have no fear: Dinges expects that the supply stream should speed up exponentially in coming weeks.?

In the meantime, as Eric Zeman of InformationWeek points out, there are still a few ways to get your hands on a new iPhone.?

"First, you can try your luck at your local Apple retail store, though Apple warns 'limited quantities may also be for in-store pickup on a first-come, first-served basis,'" Zeman writes. "Second, you can try calling around wireless network operators' stores and other retailers to see if they have any in stock. AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless, as well as Best Buy, RadioShack, Target, and Wal-Mart are selling the iPhone 5."

Qatari leader: Arab nations should intervene in Syria

A column of smoke rises over Damascus, Syria, on Wednesday after two bomb blasts were reported.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

UNITED NATIONS -- Arab nations should intervene in Syria given the U.N. Security Council's failure to stop the civil war in the country, Qatari Emir Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani said Tuesday.

"The Security Council failed to reach an effective position. In view of this, I think that it is better for the Arab countries themselves to interfere out of their national, humanitarian, political and military duties and do what is necessary to stop the bloodshed in Syria," Sheik Hamad, speaking through an interpreter, said in a U.N. General Assembly speech.

Western powers have made clear they are opposed to direct intervention and the Security Council will not sanction action against the wishes of Russia and China. President Barack Obama on Tuesday?called again for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Assad?but provided no clear direction forward.

The Syrian conflict grinds on. Cities are under attack leaving them crushed by heavy shelling. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

Sheik Hamad suggested that bypassing the U.N. Security Council would enable a peaceful transition of power in Syria.

"We had a similar precedent when Arab forces intervened in Lebanon in the mid-'70s ... to stop internal fighting there in a step that proved to be effective and useful," he added.

Sheik Hamad further urged all countries that believe in the cause of the Syrian people to provide "all sorts of support" to Syrians until they gain legitimate rights.

Activists say that 27,000 people have been killed in Syria's uprising, which began as peaceful demonstrations for reform 18 months ago but turned into an armed insurgency fighting to topple Assad, with sectarian overtones that could drag in regional powers.

"The Free Army hit the general staff building in Damascus' Umayyad Square and dozens were killed in the two powerful blasts," the information office for the FSA military council said in a statement. Syria's Information Minister Omran Zoabi had earlier said that the blasts caused only material damage.

The army said four guards were killed and 14 wounded in what it said were suicide attacks. No senior officers were hurt in the blasts, which shook the whole city just before the start of the working day, it said.

Iran's Press TV also said Wednesday that one of its correspondents was killed in Syria covering the twin blasts and gun battles in the Damascus.

The Year's Best Home Business Tips And Tricks | Christopher ...

Working for yourself can sometimes feel intimidating, but also quite gratifying. How do you get started? It also takes some planning to understand how to make your business successful. Having a home business will spawn many questions. Thankfully, there are many tips out there, including those in this article, that will guide you on making a home business successful.

Look online for supplies at wholesale costs. You can find a ton of relevant information on the Internet. Search for deals for the products and materials you need. You can buy supplies this way using your business license.

TIP! If you are having difficulty deciding on a product for your home business, think about what you could use in your life. The first thing you must do when trying to choose a product that will be successful is to determine if there is a need for a product.

Have someone look over your home business?s tax filings to see if you are claiming all the deductions that you are qualified for. Claiming every deduction for which you qualify on your taxes can save you a sizable amount of money.

Once you begin running your business from your home, you are sure to see an increase in your phone traffic. Spending a little money to have a dedicated business line may be a good idea. By having an additional phone, you?ll be able to silence it when you aren?t available.

Ask other companies to advertise your business and do the same for them. This will bring more people to your site, as well as increasing your search engine rankings. Make sure any ads accurately reflect what you are selling so that customers don?t feel duped.

TIP! One of the most important considerations in planning a home business is an accurate appraisal of the cost associated with starting the business. Although having a home based business may cost less than a traditional business, there are still expenses involved.

Business trips can be a legitimate and welcome diversion. Unlike a personal trip, you can deduct many of the associated expenses from your taxes when you take a business trip. When wanting to get out and visit somewhere look around for a place having a seminar about what you?re in business for. By incorporating business into your vacation, you make the trip tax deductible.

Empower your home business with the chance to sell products online. You increase your profits by offering your products or services online as well as at the site of your business. Many online providers allow you to register domain names at affordable rates.

Treat your clients to meals and entertainment, and you may receive tax breaks. If you occupy your clients and take them to dinner, you will be able to take some of the expense off your taxes. It is important that you keep all receipts when you entertain clients; if the IRS ever audits you, you will need to provide proof that these were legitimate expenses incurred when conducting business with clients.

TIP! When starting out in a business, learn what rates are typically charged. Set your own rates with the information that you learn in your research.

Running a home business can be a lot of work, so it is important to envision realistic expectations about the experience. Is there a market for your product, and can it stand the test of time? Can you stay in operation without resorting to unethical practices?

Make it easy for people to contact you by email, phone or mail. Establish a database that links your customers to their purchases. You can then track if your answers influenced their decision to buy your product. Keep in mind your actions, and keep doing it if it worked the first time!

If you find your home daycare business expanding, you need to make sure that you have acquired sufficient help. You will have a hard time without help if you have a lot of kids to care for.

Begin a meal or other service catering to people who are busy. You should brainstorm since there?s quite a few ways that you can help people.

Don?t quit your job when you?re just starting your home business. A new business takes a long time to generate any profit; so if possible, keep your current job going. It is certainly to your benefit to have bill and spending money on hand while waiting for your new business to generate a steady cash flow.

If you desire to make lots of cash as a home based business owner, it?s vital that you know when to take chances. Always try new methods and ideas to get more people interested in your particular business. If you do the same thing over and over again, you might miss out on a more profitable strategy.

TIP! Always make sure to include a section on your page for visitors to join your mailing list. This link should appear at the top of every page in your site, so visitors are always able to enter their contact information.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, a home business can be both appealing and intimidating. Hopefully you have gleaned some good information and advice from the tips shared in this article. Put that advice into action, and watch as things begin to work more smoothly for your home business.

HBT: Dusty Baker suffered a mini-stroke

Holy moly! In addition to the irregular heartbeat, Dusty Baker suffered a mini-stroke. ?Via Mark Sheldon, here?s the statement from the Reds:

While in Chicago on Wednesday, Reds manager Dusty Baker was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, commonly referred to as an irregular heartbeat. As he was being discharged on Friday, he suffered a mini-stroke and immediately was treated by the hospital?s stroke team, which minimized the effects of the stroke.

Dusty returned to Cincinnati on Sunday, and his condition has improved dramatically. His Cincinnati neurologist, Dr. Joseph Broderick, and cardiologists, Dr. Dean Kereiakes and Dr. Daniel Beyerbach, expect Dusty to make a full recovery and return to the dugout, possibly as soon as the season?s final series next week in St. Louis.

Damn. Here?s hoping the best for Dusty.

Fishing Holidays for the Family ? Somerset | Fishing Eye

Fishing Holidays for the Family ? Somerset

Fishing Holidays for the Family ? Somerset

Get the kids hooked on fishing this year with a week?s trip in the UK.? Some of the best angling spots are tucked into Britain?s holiday parks and with lessons available while you?re there, everyone in the family can cast out a line at some point.

If you have never been fishing in Somerset ? try it.? The mature landscaping of the country is the perfect backdrop, whether you?re sea-fishing or taking it easy lakeside.? That balance means you can enjoy the best of both angling worlds.? Plus, the kids can learn the basics on-park or maybe even catch a few Perches with a net before sailing out to sea and fishing straight from the side of your boat for something bigger.

Burnham-on-Sea is an award-winning park on Somerset?s sandy coast. It is home to several, fully stocked, coarse fishing lakes; all of which have had carp reeled in at 32lbs.? For the keen angler, this is a perfect spot to spend the family break and introduce the little ones to the sport.

You?ve got a choice of holiday homes here too: There are plenty of caravan styles to choose from but just get in touch with one of the park receptionists and the friendly voice on the phone can help you decide.? The secret tip? Ask about the safari tents or yurts at the park because they are nestled right in the sand dunes and can really add to the experience.? They?re spacious inside and are fully equipped for self-catering.? The best thing about them is how the sunlight filters through the canvas in the mornings ? nothing better than that first cuppa before strolling through the park to the lake.

The beauty of that lake being so nearby is that you can have a full morning of fishing and be back for lunch ? ready to enjoy everything else on your big family holiday.? The beach is always a great day out but remember there is lots to do on the park:? As well as the ?Fishing Experience? lessons, everyone can take part in mountain biking classes, tennis coaching sessions, football training, archery games and even fencing.

The pools (indoor and outdoor) are heated and there are loads of underwater activities to get involved in ? make sure you try the AquaJets.? As the sun sets, you can retreat back to your holiday home for a big family supper, or head to the ShowBar for an evening of free entertainment.

All in all, Somerset is an ideal spot for a fishing holiday and Burnham-on-Sea in particular has a lot to offer.? With angling lessons directly available to the kids, they are much more likely to show an interest and if it turns out they?re not that into it, they?ve got so much more to do on the park ? leaving you to enjoy the lakes in peace.

Marc Caputo: Romney?s missteps won?t be enough to win Florida for Obama

The latest statewide poll by The Miami Herald and its media partners shows a virtual tie in the presidential race in Florida. And it came as a shock to liberals and Democrats.

From the economy to foreign policy to Medicare questions, The Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald/Tampa Bay Times survey released over the weekend showed President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney neck-and-neck on the issues ? or the Republican within striking distance.

Obama and Romney are basically tied, 48-47 percent overall.

Liberals couldn?t understand how this could be true, considering all the self-inflicted wounds of Romney and his campaign.

But the data are the data. The poll reflected how people feel, not how partisans think they should feel. And the poll results remind us that there are other data out there ? all bad for an incumbent president ? that underpin the entire election in the nation?s biggest battleground state.

In short, it?s the economy, stupid. Plus a little immigration, foreign policy and healthcare.

    The data:

?? 330,000: the number of homes in foreclosure in Florida. Almost half of all homes are underwater, meaning the owner owes more on the mortgage than the home?s value.

?? 67.6 percent: this year?s second-quarter Florida homeownership rate, which hasn?t been this low since about 1999, when 15 percent fewer people lived in the state.

?? 8.8 percent: the state?s official unemployment rate, higher than the national average.

?? 800,000: the number of people counted within the unemployment rate.

?? 399: the number of callers on hold when a Herald reporter recently called to check the waiting time of the state?s ?customer service? department for jobless claims.

?? 9.8 percent: what the unemployment rate would be if all labor-force-eligible workers who haven?t found work in Florida were counted.

?? 60.1 percent: the labor-force participation rate, which hasn?t been this low since 1986.

?? 29,000: the amount Florida?s labor force shrank in July.

?? 715,000: the number of jobs lost during the 18-month recession.

?? 1.4 million: the number of undocumented immigrants deported under President Obama.

?? 55-41: the Senate vote that killed the DREAM Act sought by advocates of limited immigration amnesty.

?? 4: the number of foreign-service workers, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, killed at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on the 11th anniversary of 9/11.

?? 1979: the last time an ambassador of the United States was killed overseas, in Afghanistan.

?? $716 billion: the estimated reductions in future increases ? commonly called ?cuts? ? to Medicare under the president?s affordable healthcare act.

?? $16 trillion: the current size of the national debt.

?? 18 percent: the proportion of Floridians on Medicaid, the healthcare program for the poor.

The parade of horribles goes on, and largely began under Republican leadership.

George W. Bush was president when the recession started and budget deficits ballooned amid unfunded wars, tax cuts and a Medicare prescription-drug benefit.

Republicans have controlled Florida for years. And Gov. Rick Scott and his fellow Republicans made it tougher for people to get jobless benefits. That increases 1) the level of frustration and/or 2) the likelihood people don?t get their checks and spend them quickly.

I Take Joy | The Last Homely House?a project of life art

    Helen Allingham

?Frodo was now safe in the Last Homely House east of the Sea. That house was, as Bilbo had long ago reported, ?a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all.? Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear and sadness.?
The Fellowship of the Ring?by J.R.R. Tolkien

As a lover of great literature, Rivondell, in Lord of the Rings, captivated my attention and Sarah?s and Joy?s attention. Picturing our home as a place that remembers all the great life from eras gone by and that captures its beauty, has been one of our goals, that has given us hours and years of collecting and crafting and nurturing over the years.

A library that holds all the great books of children?s literature and classics and great thinkers, biographies and writers is a must. And now, due to Clay?s kindness to move his office to the basement, I have our library as a tea room of sorts. With comfy chairs, a tea set, art and paintings from my background all over the walls, with candle light and music?it is a lovely getaway where I can share heart-to-heart with all in my wake.

A well-stocked kitchen with all sorts of home-made recipes crafted over years of testing, with all the holiday food; food for those who are ill; birthday fare; winter-cold-night soups and breads and all sorts of healthy variety in between.

Fireplaces where stories are told and ideas discussed and children are cuddled.

bedrooms with comfy chairs and piles of books in baskets to encourage reading and quiet times and of course candles galore.

Piano, guitars, drums, flute, dulcimer?all collected over the years?some more used than others, but all for practicing producing music of all sorts.

Games and book baskets and art books and cd?s and Pandora and dvd?s from all imaginings to instruct, inspire, soothe, comfort and to stoke the imagination.

Clusters of chairs, grouped together to encourage great and close conversations?rockers on the front porch; setees and big chairs on the back deck; gatherings of chairs in 2?s all over the house to make a close meeting and discipleship time for all who are there.

And of course a bookshelf in every room, with each child collecting his own library.

A suitable place for traditions celebrated and momentous occasions retold and the Bible read, over and over and over again?to remember Him and stories of faith and heroes and courage and holiness.

This is what I have had in my heart to shape?a home that breathes life and truth and love into all who would enter?

To make sure my home, for my family and friends, is indeed the last homely house and that all that has been excellent and worthwhile over the ages is celebrated in its walls?

because everyone needs a place to belong and a home where welcome is always fresh with all who cross the doorway.

Franklin, who lives in Los Angeles, and her family "remain extremely positive" and asked that her privacy be respected.

The petite, red-headed actress starred as single mom Ann Romano in the hit CBS comedy "One Day At a Time," which aired from 1975 to 1984. Her co-stars included Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli.

Making money vs time lost with family ? Early Retirement Extreme ...

    Background:

    1. I earn 2/3 of income in the household.
    2. We could live off my husband's wages, but would not be saving much, if anything. (Daycare comes out of my wages and would be nil if I was at home.)
    3. Our house is paid in full.

    My problem:

I have returned to work after being off for 17 months and I'm having a hard time adjusting to being somewhere doing something I find redundant or useless. Nothing has changed at all. (I find that horribly depressing since I work in IT and you would think something has happened in that time.)

Most of all, I miss my son. I miss puttering around the house, fixing it up, cooking us good food, having time to sit down and eat together when my husband comes home. You know, all that good stuff. And selfishly, I miss having some free time and even more importantly, the time to get a good night's sleep.

Since I've returned, everyone is over tired, stressed and cranky (myself included). Rates of eating junk has gone up for us, and the quality of my son's sleep (and mood) has gone down because he just doesn't sleep that well at daycare.

Emotionally, I would quit this job in a second and stay home where I feel I'm needed the most. Financially, it makes more sense for me to work and bring home the "buckets of diamonds" (as one poster put it), save for five years, and then I am ERE. (Husband said he wants to work "for a long while.")

In the end I can't decide if staying home with my son when he is little and taking care of my family first is worth the lifetime of lost wages. I will never find a job that pays me this much money with these kinds of benefits if I quit and I doubt they would hire me back in five years when my son starts school full time. I've also tried to negotiate part time or a leave of absence, both denied.

    Questions:

    1. If you have been in this situation, what did you do?

    2. What are some questions I can ask myself to try to figure out what I should do?
