Emotional Affairs and temporary separation?

My partner and I have been together 8 years. Last week someone he worked with came up to him and hit on him. The next night they started going out for coffee. My partner and I are still very much in love and we have communicated that to each other, but he feels like this new person is more than a friend to him. After long discussions, my partner and I agreed to address the parts of our relationship that need improving and try to move on with our lives together. He was going to write this other person a ?dear john? letter, but after writing it, he didn?t send it. He said saying goodbye to this other person is too difficult, but he will do it for us in his own time.

One of his other friends advised him that instead of making a decision either way, he needs to spend time alone and reflect. But if we had already agreed to work things out while staying together and we?re still very much in love with each other and we are both genuinely willing to try, is a separation REALLY necessary?

Because your partner isn?t as committed to you as you are to him. He may be staying with you in the same house, and having a fling with this other person on the side. That?s probably why he said saying goodbye to that person is too hard. He doesn?t want to stop what they have. An ultimatum isn?t necessary, since you already agreed that it?s you or that other person. Now it?s time to go. Good luck.
