Goodwill offers careers as well as place to pick up used goods ...

GEORGETOWN, Ky. ? Paula Kidd found much more than a slightly used wardrobe at the Georgetown Goodwill store. she found a new career.

?I had applied to over 30 jobs,? she told the Georgetown News-Graphic. ?The only one to call was Goodwill. I have never donated, never shopped or ever stopped in before.?

Kidd started out as a production clerk at the Georgetown store two years ago. she worked part-time and handled various tasks ? helping customers, sorting donated merchandise, running the cash register and stocking the store. within a month, she was promoted to senior production clerk and became a full-time employee. last November, she became the store?s assistant manager.

?I worked my way up,? she said. ?With my promotions, I have been able to help myself get out of debt. I have been able to buy myself a car and purchased a home. Goodwill has helped me get me on my way.?

Erin Gold, vice president of the Bluegrass Division of Goodwill, has heard similar stories before.

?Goodwill?s main mission is to help people with disabilities or those with disadvantages find and maintain employment,? Gold told the Georgetown newspaper. ?At our stores, we employ people, but lots of our employees would have had trouble finding or maintaining a job if not for Goodwill.?

Goodwill Industries of Kentucky employed 1,657 Kentuckians between 2009 and 2010 at the 59 donation and retail centers throughout the state. the nonprofit organization reports 83 percent of employees have disabilities or other disadvantages.

The Georgetown store has 13 employees. More than $1.3 million in wages have been paid to employees in the store?s 11 years in Georgetown.

Goodwill also supports employees who want to pursue a GED or higher education. Its services include GED classes, training for job interviews, resume help and computer courses.

Goodwill Industries of Kentucky has a work force development center in Lexington, where any member of the community can utilize its services in job-seeking skills, job placement, referral services, resume and interview help and job coaching.
