New Delhi: Finance Minister and UPA troubleshooter Pranab Mukherjee offered two vacated berths in Cabinet to the DMK, ahead of the big Cabinet reshuffle likely on Monday, according to sources. However, these may not necessarily be the same portfolios.
Sources have said that the DMK may decide on it after its general council meet on July 23.
At the moment the DMK does not want to take the berths as M Karunanidhi feels taking berths would send a message that the party does not protest Kanimozhi's arrest and other issues, sources said.
But some DMK leaders have been asking for berths and want the party to accept the Congress' offer.
Earlier on Saturday, Pranab met Karunanidhi and assured that the DMK-Congress alliance is intact. "There is lots of writing and speculation on DMK-Congress alliance continuing or not. The alliance is there and will continue, it will be strengthened," said Mukherjee.
Former textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran also attended the meeting.
This is the first meeting between the two parties since Dayanidhi Maran's resignation over the Aircel sale controversy in the 2G spectrum scam on Friday.
Pranab also added, "I took the opportunity of calling down Karunanidhi and discuss the political situation in the country. It's a courtesy whenever I come to Chennai to meet Karunanidhi."
