Day 101:Buying pets at Petco ? 181 Days

A couple of years ago, my dad put a little pond in one of our gardens. He thought it was a great idea because it added so much to the garden, aesthetically. I thought this was a great idea because I wanted to have little pet frogs and fish in my backyard. Fast forward to the present, about two years later, and ask me if I?ve seen any fish or frogs yet. The answer would be no.

BUT THAT?S ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE!

Today, I went to the pet store to buy some little friends for the pond. I was so excited! I was raised catching frogs and turtles at the lake in New Hampshire (as were my sisters), yet whenever I see one I still get so excited! (Deb was also very excited that we were going to have little pets in the garden pond!)

So anyways, while wandering the pet store aisles of pets, I was soon introduced to Pet Store 101. Always read the signs before looking for cute reptiles and amphibians in side-by-side cages. I found myself watching adorable little gecko antics one minute, only to have a tarantula crawling 6 inches away from my face the next. Always read the signs. I almost had a heart attack.

I found the aquatics clerk and told him what I was looking for. He gave me some very VERY disheartening news. The little frogs wouldn?t be able to survive in the cold water at this time of year, and I shouldn?t buy them until the middle of June! Ah! This was not good.

However, I was still able to buy little fish. He suggested I start out with standard goldfish as the pond environment and ecosystem needed to be built up, and the pretty, unique pond fish were more expensive. He said I should get three, and then if they lasted a week, I could start buying more. Well, thanks man, you really got me excited about buying these little guys by telling me they probably won?t make it a week!

So I got three golfish: an orange one, a black and gold one, and a red and white one. On the way home, I was careful to make sure their bag wasn?t rolling around, and then decided what I would name them.

I named the orange one Brighton, the black and gold one Winston, and the red and white one Jeffrey. We got acquainted real fast. ?Don?t be scared kids. Soon you?ll be in your new home, where you?ll be lucky if you don?t die the first week.? OK, so I left out that last part. I figured their chances of survival were better if they went into the situation with a positive attitude.

When I put them in their new home, I think they really liked it. Brighton was so excited he went exploring right away.

And now I have my first real, personal pets to look after. They need a pinch of food once a day until they can feed off of the bacteria and plants in the pond. This is going to be so much fun. I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship!
