This year Education Minnesota selected an Early Childhood?Parent Educator as Minnesota Teacher of the Year. The 2011 Minnesota Teacher of the Year is Katy Smith, an early childhood/family education teacher at Goodview School in the Winona school district. This is exciting news for all Parent Educators. It is the first time ever in Minnesota that an Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) Parent Educator has received this honor.
Farmington Area Public Schools has provided Early Childhood Family Education for over 25 years. We believe that the family provides a child?s first and most significant learning environment and that parents are a child?s most important teachers. We support parents and families by offering a variety of classes and activities for parents and their children from birth to pre-kindergarten age. Our ECFE educators are all licensed by the state of Minnesota and have years of experience helping families to prepare their children for school.
There are three parts to ECFE classes
? First is Parent-Child Together Time. This is time set aside in the children?s classroom for parents and their children to interact and enjoy activities together.
? Second is the Parent Discussion Time. Parents will separate from their children and move to another room to discuss parenting topics with other parents with a licensed Parent Educator.
? Third is Child to Child Time. The children in the class will have time to play with peers and participate in activities that are age appropriate and prepared by a licensed Early Childhood teacher.
Classes are offered during the day and in the evenings.
We enjoy seeing families come into our ECFE program. We want to work together to give parents a place to ask questions, meet other parents, share ideas and learn new skills to help them be a better parent. Our classes are offered on a sliding fee scale so no one is turned away because of inability to pay.
Parents have said this about our ECFE programs:
? ?A safe place for children to interact?
? ?My child always looks forward to class!?
? ?ECFE helped me develop a community?
Have you participated in ECFE activities? Do you have a young child at home? We?d love to see you at school! We have a fabulous end of the year party planned for June 2nd, and our summer classes start June 6th and include a book series, a ?Let?s Go? series and a ?Little? series.
