According to Dr. Drew Pinsky, actor Jeff Conaway was checked into the hospital with pneumonia -- not a drug overdose, as the press had been reporting. Sadly, Dr. Drew also reports that the Celebrity Rehab veteran took a turn for the worse this weekend.
On Friday, Dr. Drew told fans via his Twitter account that the Grease actor was in stable condition, on hospital sedatives and a ventilator -- and not in a drug-induced coma as reported. "He is stable and looks like he will recover from his pneumonia," Pinsky wrote.
However, by Saturday night, Dr. Drew's tweets were sounding less optimistic. "#JeffConaway still considered critical with sepsis. Many people die from septic shock. Yes, he is VERY tenuous," Dr. Drew wrote. Then a few minutes later, he added: "Yes, we all need to pray for him. Not doing well today suddenly."
Dr. Drew began working with Conaway on his substance abuse addictions when the actor joined VH1's Celebrity Rehab in 2008. The actor had been dependent on drugs and alcohol since he was 17, and has been struggling to get clean since the '80s.
Conaway was found unconscious in his home on Friday and rushed to an Encino, Calif., hospital. Though Pinksy reported that this current hospitalization is for pneumonia, Conaway's rep says that "the use of painkillers and prescription drugs" led to his being rendered unconscious.
"In any event, there is some improvement," his rep told People on Saturday night, "and we are hopeful at this time."
